✂️ Pruning Is Not a Command to Bear Fruit: Why, When and Where Should We Cut?

Pruning removes a growing point and can redirect the plant’s stored energy into dormant buds or new shoots. The response may be branching or vegetative regrowth—not necessarily flowers or fruit—so the reason, timing and location of every cut matter.

For a long time, I understood pruning mainly as a way of controlling a plant that had grown too tall, too wide or too untidy. Cut a branch, shorten the plant and wait for it to grow again.

Then our mulberry plants presented a more interesting lesson.

The plants had arrived carrying fruits, but those were already formed and simply continuing to ripen. After the mother plants were cut, transplanted and allowed to recover, new leaves began appearing at the tips. The cuttings also started producing fresh growth.

Naturally, the next question was: How do we make the mother plants fruit again?

The answer involved pruning—but not immediately.

The remaining berries must first finish ripening. The current pale-green shoots must then be allowed to mature and become darker and firmer. Only afterward can selected tips be pruned to stimulate another round of bud break and branching, which may produce the next crop.

That was when I realized that I had misunderstood pruning.

Pruning is not simply cutting a plant shorter. It is not a punishment for excessive growth, nor is it a universal command telling every plant to flower or bear fruit. It is a deliberate intervention, and its result depends on the plant, its age, its condition, the part removed and the timing of the cut.

Why Do We Prune Plants?

Gardeners prune for several different reasons.

1. To remove dead, damaged or diseased growth

This is the most straightforward reason. A dead branch cannot recover, while damaged or diseased tissue may become an entry point or reservoir for pests and pathogens.

Removing affected growth can protect the healthier portions of the plant. Dead, damaged and diseased branches are often called the “three Ds” of pruning.

2. To improve structure

Young trees and shrubs can be trained before their branches become thick and difficult to correct.

A gardener may remove:

  • Crossing branches that rub against each other

  • Weak branches with poor attachment

  • Shoots growing inward

  • Competing leaders

  • Suckers emerging from the base or below a graft

  • Vigorous vertical water shoots

The objective is not necessarily to make the plant smaller. It is to develop a stronger, more manageable framework.

3. To control size and direction

A plant growing in open ground may have space to become a full-sized tree. A plant growing on a balcony does not.

Pruning allows us to keep branches within reach, prevent them from crowding neighbouring plants and guide growth toward available sunlight.

For fruit trees, keeping the canopy low also means that flowers and fruits remain accessible for inspection, protection and harvesting. A tree may be productive, but fruiting ten metres above the ground is not particularly helpful to the home gardener.

4. To improve light and air movement

A very dense canopy can shade its own inner leaves and branches. It may also hold moisture for longer periods.

Selective thinning allows sunlight to reach more of the canopy and improves air movement between branches. This can support more even ripening and make the plant less favourable to certain fungal diseases.

However, opening a canopy does not mean stripping it bare. Leaves manufacture the carbohydrates that support roots, shoots, flowers and fruits. Removing too many leaves can weaken the plant rather than help it.

5. To encourage branching

The growing tip of a shoot exerts hormonal control over buds below it, a phenomenon known as apical dominance.

When the tip is removed, some of the buds farther down the stem may become active. Instead of one long stem continuing upward, the plant may produce two or more side shoots.

This is why tip-pruning can make basil, chilli, mulberry and many ornamental plants bushier. But increased branching does not automatically mean immediate flowering or fruiting.

6. To renew productive wood

Some fruiting plants become less productive as particular branches or canes age. Removing selected old growth makes room for younger replacement shoots.

Currants and gooseberries, for example, produce on canes of particular ages, so growers maintain a mixture of younger and older wood. Grapevines also require a carefully managed supply of fruiting canes or spurs.

Renewal pruning is therefore not random cutting. It is the gradual replacement of less useful growth with potentially productive growth.

7. To influence flowering and fruiting

This is where pruning becomes more complicated.

Plants do not all carry their flowers and fruits on the same kind of growth. One may flower on newly produced shoots, another on wood grown during the previous season, and another at the mature tips of existing branches.

Until we know where a plant forms its flower buds, we do not yet know what pruning will do.

New Wood, Old Wood and Mature Tips

The phrase “new wood” generally refers to shoots produced during the current growth cycle. “Old wood” refers to stems that developed during an earlier cycle or season.

This distinction determines whether pruning encourages flowering—or removes it.

Plants that fruit on new growth

Mulberry and guava can flower and fruit in association with new shoots. Moderate pruning may stimulate bud break and produce fresh fruit-bearing growth.

Grapes also produce clusters on new shoots, but those shoots must arise from correctly selected mature canes or spurs. This is why grape pruning follows a more exact system than simply shortening every branch.

Plants that fruit partly on older growth

Some figs can produce an early crop on growth from the previous season and another crop on the current season’s shoots. Removing all older wood may therefore sacrifice one of the crops.

Currants and gooseberries commonly produce on one-, two- and three-year-old canes. If every older cane were removed at once, the harvest would suffer.

Plants that flower from mature branch tips

Mangoes form flower panicles at the ends of mature shoots. Tip-pruning can help shape a mango tree earlier in the growth cycle, but cutting those mature tips close to flowering time can remove the very sites where flowers would have appeared.

Citrus also needs periods in which its shoots are allowed to mature. Constantly clipping every new flush can keep the plant repeatedly replacing leaves instead of progressing toward flowering.

This leads to one of the most important pruning principles:

Before cutting a fruiting plant, find out whether it flowers on new shoots, old wood, short spurs, canes or mature branch tips.

Without that information, pruning becomes guesswork.

When Is the Best Time to Prune?

There is no single pruning month that applies everywhere.

Advice written for temperate countries often recommends late-winter pruning because many plants are dormant and have not yet started their spring growth. In tropical Singapore, we cannot simply transfer those calendar dates to the balcony.

Here, it is often more useful to watch the plant’s growth stage.

Prune after harvesting when the next crop depends on new growth

For our mulberries, the sensible sequence is:

  1. Allow all existing fruits to ripen.

  2. Harvest them.

  3. Let the current soft shoots mature.

  4. Moderately tip-prune selected branches.

  5. Allow dormant buds to produce another flush.

  6. Observe whether flowers and young fruits appear with that growth.

Cutting while fruits are still developing would remove useful leaves supporting the crop. Cutting again while the replacement shoots remain soft would repeatedly interrupt recovery.

Prune flowering plants according to where their buds form

Plants that bloom on old wood are generally pruned shortly after flowering, before they prepare the buds for the next cycle.

Plants that bloom on new growth can often be pruned before that new flush begins.

The exact timing still depends on species and local growing conditions.

Prune newly transplanted or stressed plants conservatively

A plant that has recently been transplanted, rooted from a cutting, suffered heat injury, lost leaves or experienced root damage needs time to recover.

Fresh leaves on a cutting are encouraging, but they do not always prove that a large root system already exists. Some cuttings initially grow using reserves stored in their stems.

Pruning such a plant merely to encourage more branches may demand more from roots that are still developing.

Remove hazardous or seriously diseased growth when necessary

Dead, broken or badly diseased branches do not always have to wait for the ideal fruit-pruning season. They may be removed when discovered, using clean tools and suitable weather conditions.

Routine shaping and fruit-production pruning, however, can usually wait until the plant is healthy and at the appropriate stage.

Heading Cuts and Thinning Cuts Are Not the Same

Two cuts can produce very different responses.

A heading cut

A heading cut removes the end portion of a shoot or branch.

It commonly stimulates buds below the cut, causing several new shoots to develop. Tip-pruning is a mild form of heading.

Heading can make a plant bushier, but excessive heading can also create a crowded cluster of weak shoots that eventually requires more pruning.

A thinning cut

A thinning cut removes an entire branch or shoot at its point of origin.

Instead of stimulating a dense cluster near the cut, it opens the canopy and redirects growth into the branches that remain.

Thinning is useful for removing crossing branches, unwanted water shoots and excessive interior growth.

Neither cut is automatically better. The correct choice depends on whether the objective is to produce branching, open the canopy, renew old wood or correct the plant’s structure.

Why a Tall Plant May Still Have No Fruits

After learning about pruning, it is tempting to look at every towering, fruitless plant and conclude that it simply needs to be cut.

Sometimes pruning will help—but height alone does not explain the absence of fruit.

A plant may remain fruitless because:

  • It was grown from seed and is still in its juvenile stage.

  • It does not receive enough direct sunlight.

  • Excessive nitrogen is keeping it strongly vegetative.

  • Its shoots have not been allowed to mature.

  • Local temperature or day length does not provide the flowering signal it needs.

  • It requires another compatible plant for pollination.

  • It belongs to a species with separate male and female plants.

  • It has been repeatedly pruned at the wrong time.

  • Its flowers are being damaged or failing to pollinate.

  • It is under root, water, pest or heat stress.

  • Its cultivar is poorly suited to the local climate.

An unpruned mulberry can still bear fruit. Pruning helps manage its size and can stimulate productive new growth, but it does not give the plant an ability it never possessed.

Likewise, cutting a juvenile seed-grown fruit tree does not instantly make it mature.

Where Fruiting Pruning Does Not Apply

Not every edible plant needs pruning to induce a crop.

Strawberries flower from their crowns. Cutting their leaf tips will not make them flower. Removing runners may help a plant retain more resources, but that is different from pruning fruit-bearing branches.

Leafy vegetables are harvested by cutting leaves or growing tips, but their purpose is continued vegetative production rather than fruit induction.

Root crops such as sweet potato, cassava and radish depend heavily on their leaves to manufacture carbohydrates. Excessive shoot removal can reduce what the plant sends to its storage roots, even though light harvesting may be possible in crops grown for both leaves and roots.

Palms do not branch like mulberry trees after their central growing point is cut. Removing the single growing point of many palms can kill them. Only dead or declining fronds should be removed as appropriate; cutting the crown is not ordinary pruning.

Young rooted cuttings also should not be treated like established mother plants. Their first job is to develop roots and a working canopy, not to carry a crop.

Can Fertilizer Replace Pruning?

No—and pruning cannot replace nutrition either.

A high-potassium fertilizer may support flowering, fruit development and general plant function when potassium is needed, but it cannot force an immature, shaded, stressed or wrongly pruned plant to bloom.

Excess nitrogen may encourage long, leafy growth, but completely depriving a plant of nitrogen will not automatically make it fruitful. Nitrogen is still needed for chlorophyll, enzymes and healthy growth.

The objective is balanced nutrition appropriate to the plant’s stage—not an attempt to frighten or starve it into flowering.

For our container-grown mulberries, moderate feeding, adequate calcium and magnesium, consistent watering and strong sunlight support the plant. The actual pruning response will still depend on mature shoots and active buds.

How Much Should We Remove?

There is no safe universal percentage for every plant.

Young trees generally need minimal corrective pruning because their leaves and shoots are building the framework and root system. Excessive pruning can delay fruiting and stimulate an abundance of vegetative shoots.

Established plants may tolerate stronger renewal pruning, but severe cutting can still produce a mass of vigorous water shoots instead of flowers.

A cautious home-garden approach is to:

  • Decide what the cut is supposed to accomplish.

  • Remove dead, damaged and diseased material first.

  • Correct crossing or badly positioned branches.

  • Make a small number of purposeful cuts.

  • Observe the plant’s response before cutting again.

It is much easier to remove another branch later than to put one back.

Good Pruning Begins Before the Cut

Before using the shears, ask:

  1. What plant is this?

  2. Is it young, established, fruiting, recovering or stressed?

  3. Where does this species form its flowers and fruits?

  4. Has the present crop already been harvested?

  5. Is the wood mature enough to prune?

  6. Am I trying to induce branching, remove a whole branch, improve airflow or control height?

  7. What will remain to feed and support the plant after the cut?

Use clean, sharp tools. Make clean cuts without crushing the stem. Do not leave unnecessarily long dead stubs, and do not cut flush into the swollen branch collar when removing a woody branch.

Most importantly, resist the urge to cut merely because a plant appears to be doing nothing.

Sometimes it is not doing nothing. It may be maturing shoots, building roots, storing carbohydrates or preparing buds too small for us to see.

Pruning Is a Conversation, Not a Command

A gardener makes a cut, but the plant decides how it will respond.

A mulberry may activate several buds. A mango may lose a potential flowering tip. A grapevine may become productive because the correct nodes were retained. A young tree may answer severe pruning with even more leafy growth.

The shears do not carry a single instruction. Their meaning changes with the plant and the timing.

Our mulberries will eventually be tip-pruned—but only after their old fruits finish ripening and their present shoots mature. The waiting is not a delay in the work.

The waiting is part of the pruning.

And perhaps that is the larger lesson: good gardening is not merely knowing when to act. It is also learning when the plant is asking us to leave it alone.
