My First Kratky Lettuce Harvest (Success… But Slightly Bitter!)
Today I harvested my first homegrown lettuce from my Kratky setup.
And I’m not going to lie — this felt like a real milestone.
Not because it was perfect…
…but because it was real.
A working system.
A plate of food.
And one honest lesson that will make the next cycle better.
🌿 The Harvest Moment
When I placed the harvested leaves on a plate, it finally hit me:
This is food I grew on my own balcony.
The leaves looked:
- clean
- crisp
- healthy
- proper lettuce-shaped
No drama. No fancy equipment.
Just a simple Kratky container quietly doing its job.
And yes — I ate everything. 😄
😅 Taste Check: “Hmm… a bit bitter.”
Here’s the part that surprised me.
While eating, I said out loud:
“Tastes a bit bitter.”
My wife had already taken some, and she didn’t comment at first.
But the moment I said it, she agreed:
“Yeah… it’s a bit bitter.”
And honestly? I love that.
Because that means I’m not just “growing plants”…
I’m learning how to grow better food.
✅ The System Worked (That’s the Win)
Even with the bitterness, this harvest is a success.
Because bitterness isn’t failure — it’s feedback.
The lettuce still grew well, which means:
- the Kratky method works
- the roots did their job
- the nutrient solution sustained growth
- my balcony conditions didn’t kill the crop 😄
That’s a solid first cycle.
🤔 Why Lettuce Turns Bitter (Even When It Looks Healthy)
From what I’ve learned, bitterness usually comes from plant stress.
And in a Singapore balcony environment, stress can come from:
1) Heat + harsh afternoon sun
Lettuce prefers cool weather.
But balconies can become a mini-oven, especially in the afternoon.
The plant survives…
but it produces stronger flavors and sometimes bitterness.
2) Harvest timing
Lettuce is sweetest when it’s harvested younger.
If it stays longer, it can become:
- more bitter
- more “green” tasting
- less tender
3) Kratky concentration near end of cycle
In Kratky, as the water level drops, the remaining solution can become more concentrated.
That can stress the plant slightly — and again, bitterness can increase.
🔧 What I’ll Improve for Round 2
This is the exciting part.
Because now I have a working baseline — and improving it is easy.
✅ 1) Add partial shade during peak sun
Even 30–50% shade during harsh afternoon hours should help.
This isn’t blocking light.
It’s reducing heat stress.
✅ 2) Harvest earlier
Next round, I’ll harvest when leaves are:
- younger
- tender
- salad-perfect
✅ 3) Avoid letting the reservoir drop too low
Instead of letting the nutrient solution concentrate too much at the end, I can do a simple mid-cycle action:
Top up a little plain water (not a full reset).
✅ 4) Chill before eating
Fresh-picked lettuce eaten warm can taste stronger.
Next time:
- wash
- dry
- chill
Then eat.
Crisper texture, sweeter taste.
🌱 Final Verdict
First Kratky harvest: Success. ✅
Taste: slightly bitter, but fixable. ⚠️
Next cycle: same system, better results. 🔥
